ATACO RUTA DE LAS FLORES

ATACO IS THE TOWN OF THE MURALS

TELARES IN ATACO

VERY CATHOLIC TOWN WITH A VERY COLORFUL CHURCH
IN HONOR TO THE VIGEN OF CONCEPCION

Concepcion de Ataco is located 105 km west of San Salvador, in the Department of Ahuachapán. The town offers the peacefulness of the mountains, surrounded by hills and offers beautiful sights. Ataco in Nahuat means "place of elevated water springs". The population is a direct descendant of pre-Columbian era. The city was founded by Pipiles in the heart of the Apaneca mountain range. Some of the handcrafts you can find in Ataco are: knits, carpentry, ebonite, and tins. Ataco celebrates its patron saint festivities December 11 - 15 in honor of the Virgin of the Inmaculate Conception.

The town started to gain popularity around 2004 when it entered a government sponsored competition (Pueblos Vivos or Towns Full of Life). The residents did a total makeover of the city. Some started to paint murals all over town. That idea paid off and Ataco is known today for those beautiful pieces of arts adorning the streets. Not only that, artisans, chefs and artists started to open craft stores, galleries, restaurants and looms. All of this magic resurgence has taken place under the vigilance of coffee growing in the nearby mountains
.
